For most of its life, the thyristor does nothing,this means that the thyristor is transparent in normal operation, i.e. an open switch.
Thyristor limits overvoltages to a safe level,the thyristor switches, shorting out the high energy transients - the switch closes When switched.
All current passes through the thyristor no harmful voltages reach electronics.electronics are protected.
At end of fault condition ,thyristor switches off–switch opens. Normal operation is restored
